Amherst, New Hampshire is located in Hillsborough County, about 10 miles west of downtown Nashua, NH. With a population of a little over 10,000 citizens and an area of 34.8 square miles, Amherst has grown into a suburban community with many recent newcomers.
Amherst, at one time a county seat, with a long colonial history, was an important New Hampshire hub until the railroads bypassed the center of town in the 19th century. Many historic buildings are well preserved in the center of town. Fourth of July parades, christmas tree lightings, and band concerts still occur on the town green due to considerable public volunteer work that makes them happen every year.
Many Amherst residents run small businesses in town, while others work in neighboring Manchester or Nashua, or even commute further south to jobs in Massachussetts.
